Wij, ondergetekenden, willen dat mensen die stotteren de vrijheid krijgen om te mogen stotteren. Het is niet redelijk om van ons te verwachten of zelfs te eisen dat we vloeiend gaan spreken. Wij stotteren. Zo spreken wij nu eenmaal. Soms kan een therapie of hulpmiddel het stotteren verminderen, maar bij de meesten van ons heeft dat geen duurzaam effect. Het is aan ons – en aan niemand anders – om onze weg hierin te vinden.
Hoewel de roep om diversiteit en inclusie steeds luider klinkt, voelen wij ons daarin niet of nauwelijks meegenomen. Op het werk, in het onderwijs, in de alledaagse dienstverlening is er eigenlijk geen aandacht voor ons, laat staan dat we ondersteuning krijgen. We voelen continu de maatschappelijke druk om ons stotteren te ‘overwinnen’. Als individu kunnen we dat doel inderdaad nastreven, maar als stottergemeenschap verwerpen wij het idee dat wij moeten stoppen met stotteren.
Organisaties die claimen inclusief te zijn en gelijke kansen te bieden, kunnen mensen die stotteren niet aan hun lot overlaten. Onze stem doet er ook toe, we verdienen net als ieder ander ruimte en respect.
Het is ons recht om te spreken zoals wij spreken.
