A Stuttering New Year’s Resolution

New Year’s Resolutions can be tricky things.

(I’m not good at keeping them. Let’s make that clear immediately.)

If you’re anything like me, you go into the New Year with the best of intentions. You think you’re going to try something new and transform your life. You make big plans for how you’re going to stick to this new habit and impress everyone around you.

And if you’re anything like me, these plans will fall by the wayside almost immediately. You’ll either forget about them once the excitement of New Year’s Eve passes (or Hogmanay, as we call it in Scotland), or you’ll get into your own head and convince yourself that it was a silly idea in the first place and there was no point in doing it.

I’m excellent at talking myself out of ideas, especially if they challenge me to put myself out there and try something totally new that might not work out. My brain gets involved and tells me that it’s easier to just carry on as normal, stick to the status quo, ignore that impulse telling me that it might be fun to take a risk for once.

Last year, I told myself that I would start a YouTube channel in order to share videos where I talk about different aspects of my stammer and share my story. But that voice got involved and told me that there was no point; that no-one would be interested in hearing any of that. So, although I recorded multiple videos throughout the year, I never did anything with them and they were left to sit on my laptop, no doubt wondering why I had abandoned them.

But 2019 was a great year for Stamily, which saw the website grow in numbers and welcome lots of new members to the team. It’s been inspiring! After seeing everyone else put themselves out there and create content, I’m finally forcing myself to follow through on a New Year’s resolution (albeit a year later than planned)! My YouTube channel StammerOn is being launched this month, where I will share my experiences of my stammer, strange rambles that should probably be kept to myself, game plays, reactions, and more. Videos will be posted weekly and will be shared to Stamily as well.

The voice is still there, but I’ve decided to ignore it for the moment see what happens! Please hold me to account and let me know if there are any videos you would like to see!

2019 was a good year for Stamily. You can help to make 2020 a great one. We welcome any suggestions for videos or other content that you would like to see us create in the future.
